What is the Geotechnical Academy?

A collaboration between Equipe Group and Geotechnical Engineering Ltd, providing fundamental technical and commercial training to aspiring geo-professionals, helping them to apply their theoretical and technical understanding in the practical and commercial world.

The training experience is different from other more traditional offerings, in that it will take a group of delegates and their sponsors on a journey over a whole year, to greater knowledge and appreciation of their subject.

Who might benefit from training?

Geotechnical and geo-environmental engineers in the early stages of their careers, from both ‘Consultant’ and ‘Contractor’ firms. It is also ideal for those who are moving into these geodisciplines from other technical areas, or those who feel they could do with a refresher.

Who is involved?

Delegates will be drawn from various companies throughout the industry, to form groups of between 10 and 15 people. Training sessions will be held ten times over the course of a 12 month period.

Each delegate will have a sponsor, who is likely to be their manager. Sponsors will be involved directly, through remote discussions, debates and feedback and will be welcome to attend training days with their delegates whenever they feel appropriate.

A Tutor/Trainer for each group will lead the course and stimulate further engagement of the delegates and their sponsors during and between each of the training days.

Guest Speakers and demonstrators from across the industry will be invited to contribute, as appropriate. This will be decided according to delegates’ needs.

What subject matter does the training cover?

Technical: practical aspects of acquiring data on ‘the ground’ (both geotechnical and geoenvironmental), and the processing, analysis, interpretation and communication of that data; field techniques (drilling, sampling, in situ testing, monitoring, observing, surveying), laboratory testing and scheduling, soil and rock logging, desk studies and report writing, all in line with the new Eurocodes. It does not include geotechnical or geo-environmental design.

Commercial: risk and reward, conditions of contract, specifications, procurement, insurance, finance and profitability, employment, management, health and safety, underground hazards, innovation, industry trends, political influences etc.

For full details of the content of each module, please refer to the Module Content document.

What form does the training take?

Each training day will be divided into roughly three sections:

One: Classroom –based learning, delivered by industry experts through lectures, videos, case studies, discussion etc.

Two: Practical demonstrations of equipment and techniques, both in the field and in the laboratory, including some hands-on activities.

Three: Facilitated debates and discussions amongst the delegates. This will provide the opportunity to learn through shared experience.

Each delegate will be expected to attend all the sessions in order to get maximum benefit.

What happens after each training day?

The tutor will initiate, stimulate and co-ordinate debates and discussions, suggest further reading, answer questions and will be available to give advice and guidance to help embed learning.

Delegates, their sponsors, trainers and guest speakers will be encouraged to keep in touch with each other on LinkedIn between each session and ideally as they continue to build their careers.

How will delegates benefit from this training?

Gain knowledge, join in practical demonstrations of equipment and techniques, take part in discussion about a wide variety of technical and commercial topics relevant to their work and hopefully have a thoroughly enjoyable experience to inspire them into the future! All training days will be eligible for CPD certification.

In addition, sponsors will benefit from having a well trained and well motivated member of staff, with an enhanced applied knowledge and the confidence to use it.

How much does it cost?

£800 per delegate, payable prior to the commencement of the course. The course is subsidised by Geotechnical Engineering Ltd.

Where and when is the training held?

The training will be held at Geotechnical Engineering’s headquarters in Gloucester, except where visits to sites are arranged.

Each day will start at 9.30am and finish at 5.00pm.
